Camper Goes Up In Flames on I-95

South Carolina (November 1, 2011)  A camper caught on fire and forced authorities to close I-95 north for close to an hour.  The blaze occurred near exit 53 when the driver of a pickup truck towing a camper noticed flames coming from the rear of the camper.  The owner was able to pull the vehicle onto the right shoulder and tried unsuccessfully to extinguish the fire.  The driver quickly unhooked the pickup truck from the camper and pulled the vehicle a safe distance away and called the Fire department.

The Colleton fire department quickly arrived on the scene, but the camper was fully engulfed in flames.  Strong winds caused the fire to jump across the highway igniting the grass in the center median.

A firefighter suffered minor injuries when he twisted his ankle responding to the fire.

The owner was able to remove some contents before the flames destroyed the camper.
