Chain Reaction Accident Kills 5 year old

Maryland (December 28, 2011)  A 5-year-old boy was killed in a tragic rear-end crash on I-83 at the ramp to I-695 in Timonium.  According to Maryland State Police the crash happen at 2:45 p.m. when a Jeep rear-ended an Acura setting off a chain reaction crash.

James Owen was driving an Acura with Susan Owen and their two children, nine year-old Alexandra Owen and five year-old Jake Owen on the ramp from northbound Interstate 83.  Owens began to brake when a Jeep, driven by Devin McKeiver,23, slammed into the rear of the Acura.  The force of the impact pushed the Acura into the rear of a Toyota Pruis, which then struck the rear of a Subaru.

Authorities closed the roadway to allow a helicopter to land.  The two children, Alexandra Owen and Jake Owen were airlifted to Johns Hopkins Children’s Center.  Jake Owen died from his injuries.  James Owen and Susan Owen sustained serious injuries and were transported to Johns Hopkins Hospital.  The driver of the Jeep was taken to Sinai Hospital where he was treated and released.

Traffic was backed up in the area for several hours as police investigate the scene and cleaned up the wreckage.  All lanes were reopened by 6:30 p.m.

  1. Our Family’s thoughts and prayers go out to the Owen family.
    This tragedy is impossible to comprehend, and most certainly preventable based on the horrible decision that Mr. McKeiver made.
    Susan and Spike are wonderful people, and their children are angels…Jake’s loss will touch all of their friends and family members forever.
    I hope something positive will come out of this, and changes will be made so that no other family has to endure the loss of a child.
    I can’t even begin to think about the pain Spike, Susan, and Alexandra are suffering…
    I hope everyone reading this will pray for the Owen family, and cherish every moment they have with their family.
