Downed trees close I-95 South in North Carolina

North Carolina (August 27, 2011)  According to the North Carolina Department of Transportation downed trees from Hurricane Irene has closed the southbound lanes of Interstate 95 at Exit 171- Halifax.  All southbound lanes are closed from Exit 171 to mile marker 166 in Halifax County.

If you must drive in this weather, the best alternative route is to take Exit 171, and make a right turn onto NC-125. Follow NC-125 for about a mile and make a left onto American Legion Road. Stay on American Legion Road for 1.5 miles, Turn left onto NC-48. Continue on NC-48 for 16 miles. Make a left onto NC-561, follow 561 for 7.7 miles. This will put you back on I-95 at Exit 160. It is, however, strongly advised that you do not attempt to travel if you do not need to.
