Driver Killed on New Jersey Turnpike

New Jersey (November 30, 2011)  A driver was killed and his passenger injured when a SUV rear-ended a construction vehicle in the northbound lanes of the New Jersey Turnpike.  The crash happened around 11:50 a.m.

New Jersey State police say the male driver of a 2010 Chevy Traverse slammed into the rear of a  construction vehicle, which was on the left shoulder of the road.  The Traverse sustained extensive damage to the front end, as the car went partially under the rear of the truck.

The unidentified male driver had to be extricated from the vehicle.  He was pronounced dead at the scene.  A female passenger in the front seat was severely injured and rushed to Cooper University Hospital.

Update: Police have identified the driver as Robert Johnston, 73, of Navesink. His wife, Mary was seriously injured.

Police shut down the left lane of the New Jersey Turnpike for several hours while they conducted an investigation and attended to the injured passenger.

Traffic was delayed in the area for most of the afternoon.

The New Jersey State police are still investigating what caused the fatal accident.
