Driver Struck and Killed After Rear-end Accident

New Jersey (October 30, 2011)  A driver was killed on the New Jersey Turnpike after a rear-ended crash Saturday night.  According to the New Jersey State Police the accident happened around 9:30 at mile marker 116 in Bergen County.  Michael O’Connell was driving a 2002 Mercury Sable northbound when he crashed into an Acura MDX in the left hand lane.

O’Connell got out of his vehicle to take a look at the damage when a 2001 Mercury Sable sideswiped O’Connell and his vehicle.  The impact tossed Michael O’Connell onto the roadway, where he was struck by at least one vehicle.  State Police believe a second vehicle may have also run over O’Connell while he was lying in the roadway.

64 year-old Michael O’Connell was pronounced dead at the scene.  A passenger in the Acura MDX sustained minor injuries.

The driver of the 2001 Mercury Sable stopped at the scene of the accident, and at this time has not been charged.  The vehicles that ran over the victim in the roadway did not stop at the accident site.  New Jersey State Police are investigating this crash.
