Fatal Rear-end Wreck on I-95 (Update)

South Carolina (October 1, 2011)  One person was killed on I-95 north in South Carolina when pickup truck struck a vehicle that was being loaded onto a flatbed tow truck near Exit 28. 

According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol the disabled vehicle and tow truck were on the right shoulder of I-95 around noon.  Denise Smith and Phyllis Amsler Cook were standing on the side of the truck while they were preparing to load the disabled vehicle.

James Thomas, driving a 2008 GMC pickup apparently lost control of his vehicle and ran up the ramp of the flatbed tow truck, slamming into the disabled vehicle.  The disabled vehicle fell off the right side of the tow truck striking Denise Smith, the GMC pickup went airborne off the left side of the tow truck, killing Phyllis Amsler Cook.

Denise Smith was transported to Memorial Hospital where she died from her injuries.  Denise Smith was the owner of East Coast Recovery, the tow truck company.

The driver of the pickup truck, James Thomas was taken to Colleton Medical Center.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating this fatal accident.
