New York (March 29, 2012) A 29-year-old Mount Vernon police officer was killed in a head-on crash this morning on I-95 N in the Bronx. The accident occurred at approximately 2:30 a.m. near Bartow Avenue, Exit 11, according to Mount Vernon Police Commissioner Carl Bell.
Reginald Velez was driving south on the northbound lanes of Interstate 95 when he crashed into a tractor trailer. The impact of the crash caused his Lexus to burst into flames. Velez, who was engaged to be married, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The crash is under investigation by Internal Affairs.

Visiting hours will be Saturday and Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m.
Funeral will be on Monday April 2, at 9:30 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Church, at 670 Yonkers Avenue in Yonkers.
