Horse killed in I-95 accident

South Carolina (April 19,2012) A horse was killed in an accident on I-95 in Colleton county. The crash occurred shortly after 7:30 p.m. on Interstate 95 near miler marker 43, between exits 42 (Yemassee) and exit 53 (Walterboro) according to South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The driver of the trailer veered off the roadway onto the right shoulder causing the trailer to overturn and come to a rest in an embankment.

Fire and Rescue crews worked for three hours trying to free the six horses trapped in the trailer.  Sadly one horse had to be euthanized due to the extent of its injuries.  Five horses were saved and brought to Edisto Equine Clinic.

According to South Carolina Highway Patrol one of the two men inside the trailer suffered serious injuries and was taken to Colleton Medical Center.

The accident is under investigation.
