Man Killed After Being Ejected From Car

Florida (June 1, 2011) A Merritt Island man was killed on I-95 when his 1995 Honda Civic struck a steel pole and flipped over. The driver, Jason Hecklinger, was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the incident and ejected from the vehicle.

According to Florida Highway Patrol, the driver was attempting to get onto the exit ramp to State Road 520, when the vehicle went through a safety zone and spun off the shoulder of the roadway. Summer Jo Bertagna was a passenger in the vehicle and was wearing a seat belt. She was able to free herself from the mangled wreck and get help.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene and the passenger was taken to Wuesthoff Hospital in Rockledge. FHP is continuing its investigation and awaiting the results of a toxicology report to determine whether alcohol played a role in the deadly accident.
