Mother Struck and Killed On I-95

North Carolina (July 24, 2011)  A Mother was struck and killed in the median of Interstate 95 near Exit 173/US 158 when attempting to exchange Insurance Information with another driver.

According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol Barbara Coppley was traveling north on I-95 with her husband and young son in a rented Dodge minivan around 4 p.m. on Sunday when the tractor-trailer ahead, driven by Jearl Harrison, lost its drive shaft. Barbara Coppley’s vehicle struck the drive shaft, which flattened her tires.

She pulled her minivan off to the right side of the Interstate.  Another vehicle, a 2010 Ford Fusion, then struck the drive shaft, which too caused flats on the Fusion.  The driver, Alice Allen, pulled over behind the Coppley’s minivan.

Coppley got out of her vehicle and was walking on the side of the road towards the tractor-trailer, to get his insurance information when a third vehicle struck the drive shaft.

George Cayia Jr, driving a Lincoln Town Car, struck the drive shaft, blowing out his rear tire.  He lost control of his vehicle and spun onto the side of the roadway and struck  Coppley, pinning her against the guardrail and was killed instantly.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol are investigating the fatal accident, no charges have been filed at this time.

  4. What a tragedy! My daughters Girl Scout troop was on their way back to Va after a trip to Savannah. The girls came upon the accident before police and rescuers got there and saw Ms Coppley pinned. They also mentioned seeing a boy crying in the median. Our hearts and prayers goes out to Ms Coppley and her family and everyone involved in this terrible accident.
