One killed when Tractor-trailer explodes on I-95

Florida (December 29, 2011)  One person is dead and five were injured when a tractor-trailer carrying methyl bromide erupted in flames in an accident with three vehicles on Interstate 95 in Volusia County.  The fiery crash happened around 3:30 a.m. in the northbound lanes of Interstate 95 a mile north of exit 256-Taylor Road.

John Winkler, 58, was driving a logging truck north on I-95 when he lost control of the vehicle causing it to overturned, littering the roadway with logs.  A car, driven by Victoria Granger, 16, smashed into the logs and was then hit by a USPS tractor-trailer, driven by Samuel Behar.  The driver of the tractor-trailer carrying methyl bromide, Francis Trammel, 66, crashed into the overturned truck and erupted into flames.  The fire and resulting explosions quickly engulfed the roadway and surrounding brush.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Trammel was killed in the accident.  Granger and her two passengers, Pamela Granger, 42, and Sabrina Granger, 14, sustained injuries and were transported to Halifax Medical Health Center.  Winkler and Behar also sustained injuries in the crash.

Authorities closed I-95 in both directions as fire and rescue personnel worked to extinguish the blaze and rescue the victims.  The southbound lanes of I-95 were re-opened around 6:30 a.m. the northbound lanes remain closed.  A hazmat team is on the scene assisting in the clean up.

The northbound lanes of I-95 will be closed indefinitely as authorities access the damage to the Interstate.

The Florida Highway patrol is still investigating the fatal accident.

  1. why in the hell was a 16 year old driving a car at 330 in the morning and with two passengers. probably her mother and sister. what is up with that.

      They were driving at 3:30 in the morning to catch their plane at 6 a.m. The 16 year old was not driving, the mother was. they got the story wrong. These people are from New York and were on their way home.

    She wasn’t. Her mother, Pam, was. Pam sustained left side injuries (from Seatbelt) while Tori sustained rightside injuries (from Seatbelt) along with other major injuries. Tori was the one to get out of the car, depite a broken femur, to get help her mother and sister out of the overturned car. They were headed to the airport for an a.m. flight after spending the holiday with Pams family… now you know more of the facts sir.

    My family and I traveled as well this past Christmas holiday. Our destination was of course Disney….Orlando. We drove in on I-95 and having only been there a few days, this accident was breaking news. We were so saddened to hear and see this because the news pics looked so tragic. I believe at one point they were unable to find the one of the victims. We send our condolences to the gentleman that lost his life in this accident and pray to God that the others involved in the crash make a full recovery. May God bless you all.
