Police Officer Injured in Crash with Tractor-trailer on I-695

Maryland (December 28, 2011)  A Baltimore County police officer was injured in a crash on Interstate 695 in Towson.  The accident happened just before noon on I-695 at exit 28-Providence Road involving a tractor-trailer, a police cruiser and a Jeep.

The police officer was attempting to merge onto I-695 when his cruiser was struck by the tractor-trailer in the far right lane.  The impact sent the cruiser across all three lanes of the roadway, the rear of the cruiser crashed into the concrete center median.  The tractor-tractor came to a stop in the right lane with the Jeep that was spun sideways.

Rescue workers had to extricate the officer from his vehicle, he was airlifted to Shock Trauma.  Two women in the Jeep were injured and taken to Sinai Hospital.  The driver of the tractor-trailer and his passenger were not injured.

Traffic quickly backed up for several miles as police shut down the inner loop of I-695.  All lanes were re-opened around 2:30 p.m. but not before causing traffic jams on many side streets in the area.

Police are still investigating the cause of the accident.
