Tandem Tractor-Trailer fire on I-95

Florida (September 12, 2011)  A tandem tractor-trailer fire on I-95 south slowed the morning commute for travelers on Monday in Melbourne.  The accident occurred around 6:30 a.m. near Exit 191- Wickham Road when the rear trailer caught fire.

The Old Dominion tandem tractor-trailer was hauling a load of tires and wood pallets when the rear tire caught fire.  The fire quickly ignited the cargo in the rear trailer.  The Brevard County Fire Rescue used foam to put out the stubborn fire.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol all southbound lanes were closed for a brief time as the Brevard County Fire Rescue worked to extinguish the blaze.

All lanes of I-95 south were re-opened around 9 a.m. but not after traffic had backed up for several miles.

It is believed that a brake fire was the cause of the accident.

These double trailers always scare me when I see them on I-95. It is so hard to pass them and on a windy day they are all over the road.
