Tow Truck Operator struck and killed on I-95

Florida (January 2, 2012)  A tow truck operator was struck and killed by a vehicle on I-95 north Monday afternoon in Boynton Beach.  The fatal accident around 1:25 p.m. in the northbound lanes of Interstate 95 near Exit 56-Woolbright Road according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Joseph Ricciardelli, an employee with Emerald Towing, was on the scene to assist the Florida Highway Patrol remove the vehicle of a suspect that had been arrested.  Ricciardellli had secured the vehicle on his tow truck and was picking up the safety cones from the HOV lane.  Police state Johnnie Knowles, 59 of Deerfield Beach was traveling north on I-95 in a 1995 Toyota Camry when a vehicle in front of him slowed down.  Knowles veered to the left in an attempt to avoid a rear-end collision when he struck Ricciardellli in the closed down HOV lane.

Authorities closed the northbound lanes of I-95 to allow a medical helicopter to land.
Joseph Ricciardelli, 46, was air lifted to Delray Medical Center, where he died.

Knowles sustained minor injuries and was taken to Bethesda Memorial Hospital.

Florida Highway Patrol re-opened several lanes of I-95 north but traffic had backed up for several miles.
The fatal accident investigation is still open and no charges have been filed at this time.
