Tractor-trailer driver killed in fiery crash

Virginia (August 8, 2011)  According to the Virginia State Police a tractor-trailer driver was killed when his truck burst into flames after slamming into a Department of Transportation “cushion” truck on I-95 in a construction zone.  The fatal accident occurred around 2:15 a.m. in the northbound lanes of Interstate 95 near Exit 163.

The tractor-trailer plowed into the rear of the DOT truck, causing the fuel tank to rupture, igniting a fire.  State Police report the truck was fully engulfed in flames.  The unidentified truck driver died at the scene.

One construction worker broke his arm getting out of the way of the tractor-trailer, jumping over a concrete divider.

Three of the northbound lanes were shut down causing traffic to back up.  Authorities had hoped to open to the lanes around 6 a.m. but clean-up took longer than expected.
