Tractor-trailer Overturns in Center Median of I-95

Virginia (September 21, 2011)  According to the State Police a tractor-trailer crashed and overturned on I-95 south.  Around 6 a.m. a tractor-trailer, loaded with 50,000 pounds of cargo, drifted off of the left side of I-95 south near Exit 86.  The truck struck a guard rail and overturned in the center median, and  came to rest on its side near the northbound lanes of I-95.  The driver of the tractor-trailer was not seriously injured.

The guard rails and concrete walls prevented the tractor-trailer from crossing into the northbound lanes

The crash forced authorities to close the northbound lanes of I-95 as crews worked to manually unload the cargo.  The unloading of the cargo was expected to take several hours, before the truck could be removed from the ditch.

Virginia State police believe the driver may have fallen asleep, based on physical evidence of the crash.

The Virginia State Police are continuing there investigation into this rollover accident, charges have not been filed at this time.
