Traffic Nightmare on I-95

Pennsylvania (August 19, 2011)  According to PennDot I-95 was shut down in both directions in Delaware County due to a tanker truck spill that occurred around 5 p.m. Authorities closed I-95 northbound at Exit 8-Ridley Park in Delaware County.  I-95 southbound traffic was closed at Exit 17- Broad Street in Philadelphia.

WPVI is reporting Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency is aware of the incident and a Department of Environmental Protection representative has been dispatched to the scene.

Ed Truitt, Delaware County Emergency Services Executive Director, stated the tanker truck is owned by Dana Transport, Inc, and was loaded with 44,000 pounds of acetic anhydride.  Acetic anhydride is a colorless liquid that smells strongly of acetic acid, formed by its reaction with the moisture in the air, it is used as a component of photographic film.

Officials asked people in the Prospect Park area to voluntarily evacuate their residence.

Traffic was backed up for miles in both directions on Interstate 95.

Authorities were able to reopen I-95 around 9 p.m.
