High-speed pursuit ends with crash on I-95 (Update)

Florida (September 1, 2011)  According to the Virginia State Police a trooper was seriously injured when his unmarked cruiser crashed during a high speed pursuit on I-95 north.  The chase started when trooper M.C. Hite attempted to pull over a driver of an Acura TL for reckless driving.

The driver, Kwame A. Abayomi, ignored the troopers request and took off at a high rate of speed.  Trooper Hite pursued the Acura in his unmarked grey Chevy Impala northbound on Interstate 95.

During the pursuit, trooper Hite’s Impala went off the right side of I-95 near exit 89, slamming into a tree. The violent collision knocked the engine out of the Chevy Impala, the vehicle came to rest on an embankment, facing south.  The engine, landed in the northbound lanes of I-95.

Virginia State Police located Kwame A. Abayomi’s vehicle a half mile further down Interstate 95.  The suspect crossed the center median, drove north in the southbound lanes and crashed in a ravine.  The driver was apprehended near the vehicle.

Trooper M.C. Hite was taken to VCU medical center with serious non life threatening injuries.

Twenty-one year old Kwame A. Abayomi faces multiple charges, including possession of a concealed firearm.

One lane of Interstate 95 north was closed down as State police conducted its investigation.  Traffic was congested during the busy rush hour.  All lanes were re-opened around 12 p.m.
