Truck strikes Overpass to I-95

Maryland (December 12, 2011)  A tractor-trailer hauling an excavator struck a bridge overpass to I-95 in Arbutus.  The accident occurred around 1:30 p.m. near Exit 11 on I-695 causing a major traffic jam.

According to the Maryland State Police the tractor-trailer driver, Marvel J. Bonham, 52, was operating a 1985 International tractor with a flatbed tractor, loaded with a Komatsu excavator.  The boom arm of the excavator was not properly lowered and when the truck attempted to go under the I-95 16’4″ overpass on I-695 the boom struck the sign and the bridge support.  Bonham pulled off to the shoulder of I-695 as the excavator sustained significant damage, with a piece breaking off and striking a 2006 Chrysler 300.

The driver of the Chrysker, Rufus Charles was not injured.

The State Highway Administration is inspecting the overpass to insure the structural integrity of the bridge.  Authorities were forced to close two lanes of the Outer Loop and one lane of I-95 as crews work to remove the damaged sign.  Traffic is backed up for several miles and police are urging motorist to seek alternate routes.

The investigation into this accident is ongoing and charges are pending.
