Two Big-Rigs crash on I-95 in Florida

Florida (June 14,2012) An accident involving two big rigs on I-95 in Volusia County has shut down all southbound lanes.  The crash occurred shortly after 3 a.m. at mm 247,New Smyrna Beach exit,just north of SR 44 according to FHP.

The driver of the tractor-trailer carrying meat, Leonel Vazquez Suarez, 56, had fallen asleep at the wheel and  rear ended a tractor-trailer carrying one ton of 50lb bags of onions.  As a result there is a mess of onions, meat and diesel fuel all over I-95 south.

According to Mitch Henderson of FHP, no one in the onion truck was injured, however, the driver of the meat truck had to be extricated from his cab.  He was flown to Halifax Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The accident is still under investigation.

I-95 will not be opened until after 9:00 a.m. according to Volusia officials.

Alternate route: Exit at SR 44 make a left and enter onto SR 44 East, then make a right onto Glencoe Road and Old Mission Road to Indian River Boulevard, then turn right onto I-95.
