Van driver killed in collision with tractor-trailer

Florida (July 28, 2011)  According to Florida Highway Patrol the driver of a van was killed and three people were injured on northbound I-95 around 2:30 p.m. near Exit 126 (Midway Road) in St. Lucie County.  The van had been had pulled off of the northbound lanes of I-95 into the emergency lanes prior to the fatal wreck.  The driver, James Edward Gardner attempted to re enter the northbound lanes of travel, when he pulled out in front of a flat bed tractor-trailer, driven by Thomas Gerard Keleher.

The tractor-trailer struck the rear of the van, ejecting the driver.

The tractor-trailer barreled through a section of the guardrail, causing the fuel tank to leak diesel fuel.  I-95 north was closed for an hour and a half as the St. Lucie Fire Department’s special operations team responded to the accident scene.

James Edward Gardner, the driver of the van died at the scene, three people in the van were injured, one was transported by ambulance to the hospital. Thomas Gerard Keleher sustained minor injuries.  Florida Highway Patrol was able to reopen one lane of northbound traffic at 4 p.m. as traffic had backed up for miles.
