Rhode Island(March 18, 2012) A wrong way driver sideswiped one vehicle on I-95 north before crashing head on into another vehicle, killing the other driver in Providence. The fatal crash occurred around 2:00 a.m. in the northbound lanes of Interstate 95 near Exit 22-Downtown Providence, according to the Rhode Island State Police
State Police were responding to reports of a wrong way driver on I-95 north around 1:55 a.m. after the Corey A. Johnston, 24, sideswiped a vehicle near Exit 26-Lonsdale Avenue. The vehicle continued traveling south in the northbound lanes of Interstate 95. State Police finally were able to locate the wrong way driver but not before he had slammed head-on into another vehicle, driven by Domenic A. Izzi, 40, near Exit 22.
Rescue crews worked to free Izzi from the wreckage. Domenic Izzi, of Providence was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police believe the Johnston may have been intoxicated, he was injured and transported to Rhode Island Hospital.
Authorities were forced to close I-95 north for over two hours.
The Rhode Island State Police are still investigating the fatal accident.
Johnston was formally charged with Driving While Intoxicated—Death Resulting, Driving to Endanger—Death Resulting and leaving the Scene of an Accident—Attended Vehicle. Bail has been set at $25,000.
