Wrong-Way driver crashes into tractor-trailer

North Carolina (August 5, 2011)  According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol a driver going the wrong way on Interstate 95 south was seriously injured when he crashed head on with a tractor-trailer around 3 p.m. on Friday afternoon.  The driver, James Charles Godwin, entered Interstate 95 using a exit ramp and was traveling north on Interstate 95, in the southbound lanes.

Godwin’s white sedan smashed head-on with a southbound tractor-trailer, driven by, Richard Pearsall, near Exit 77 /Hodges Chapel Road.  James Charles Godwin was in critical condition and air lifted to Duke University Hospital.  Richard Pearsall, the driver of the tractor trailer, was transported to Betsy Johnson Regional Hospital.

Interstate 95 south was closed down for two hours as the Highway Patrol investigated the scene and crews worked to clean up the debris from the wreckage.  Traffic was backed up for over seven miles.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol is still investigating the accident, trying to determine what caused James Charles Godwin to enter I-95 using the exit ramp.  No charges have been filed at this time.

All southbound lanes of I-95 were reopened around 5 p.m.
